Why does ChatGPT recommend big network agencies instead of smaller, specialized ones?
A language model generates its answer based on how often a name shows up, in how many places, across everything it was trained on. It's not running an objective quality ranking. Bigger network agencies just have a lot more written about them, more press, more case studies, more award coverage, built up over a much longer stretch of time. That volume tends to win out in an open recommendation, whether or not it's actually the better fit for whoever's asking.
Does ChatGPT actually know about smaller or independent agencies?
Often, yes, and accurately too. Ask it directly about a specific independent agency and it'll usually get the founding year, the work, the reputation right. The gap only shows up in open ended recommendation questions. The model isn't wrong about who a smaller agency is, it just doesn't reach for them first when nobody's asked about them by name.
Is this permanent, or can it change?
Not fixed forever, no. The same thing driving this, how much gets written about you and how consistently, shifts over time as more coverage and mentions pile up. It moves slowly though, which is really the whole reason checking your visibility once isn't enough. You want to track it.
